Continous gearbox with multiple steps with pinions by sectors CSWT (Continuous Sector Wheel Transmission) is a new concept continuous transmission CVT allowing the variation of the diameters and number of teeth of a unique pinion built by sectors.
The change from one diameter to another and, consequently, the corresponding number of teeth is performed without decoupling the engine, not needing the clutch. The transmission is by chain or toothed belt and is totally mechanic.

Description
The gearbox is based on a new concept of pinion which is composed by several teethed sectors laid down to compose a usual circular toothed shape. The sectors can be arranged partly overlapped, so to produce a smaller pinion diameter with a minimum of teeth, or they can be shifted one another to compose a larger diameter with a larger number of teeth.
The shift of the sectors is done on the idling part of the movement, that is the part where the chain is not engaged. In this way the gearbox can be rearranged on the fly without disrupting the movement and without requiring a decoupling clutch, contrary to what is normally needed in a standard gearbox mechanisms.

The same overall concept is applicable, with minimum specific adaptations, both for chain transmissions and toothed belt transmissions.

The present prototypes demonstrate high reliability with simple and smooth operation.
Multiple systems can be cascaded to obtain a greater number of selectable speeds and/or a larger span of speed ratios.
The system can replace trapezoidal smooth belt transmissions with continuously variable diameter. In the belt case friction force acts as a primary mean for transferring the movement, with overall limited power and unavoidable energy losses. The present gearbox can withstand higher powers with minimum energy loss.

Other possible applications may include bicycle, motorbike and small car gearboxes, as well as a large number of industrial applications such as timing belts or chain drives whenever some adjustment of the speed is needed too.

Innovative Aspects:
Change from one diameter to another and, consequently, the corresponding number of teeth is performed without decoupling the engine, not needing the clutch. The continuous transmission allows the variation of the diameters and number of teeth of a unique pinion built by sectors.

This gearbox is light, compact and economic (totally mechanic).
